Campus Expansion
Updated on August 17th, 2010 at 4:19 pm,During the construction phase of our campus expansion the majority of our main parking lot will be torn up or filled with construction equipment. Click here to find out how you can help during construction. The following PDF’s are designed to help you get your family dropped off, car parked, and you into the auditorium with a minimal amount of inconvenience.
The expansion will consist of a 46,188 square foot addition to our current facility. It is important to remember that this expansion is not about a building – it’s about people. The new facility provides more opportunities to minister to children, equip adults for the work of the ministry, and train leaders to fulfill the Great Commission.
We will constantly be updating information about how the campus expansion is going on this page. Each new story posted about our Campus Expansion will populate at the top of this page, right after this explanation paragraph. Week 54
It’s been a hard week but we had a lot of help cleaning out the old classrooms and moving into the new space. Several contractors are working long hours to get the café in shape for Sunday, and to finish other details to open the building. The sign company is mounting the signage, and the landscapers hope to have most items finished Friday night. The asphalt is complete and the workers have been hard at it to get all the stripes painted. The elevator, chair lift and escalators passed their tests with a condition on the escalators final report, but we can still use them while we wait for the results. Pictures have been mounted on the walls. The IT department has most of the computers and video monitor systems in the classrooms ready to run, and the telephones are mounted and ready for use. Donivan has all the lights and sound systems ready in the two theaters. The south door through the book store is locked and will remain locked except for special needs of the bookstore. Please enter the building through the new foyer entry doors and down the stairs or escalator into the foyer and through in to the existing building. After the signs are on the doors the emergency exit door alarms will be armed; this is intended to be a secure place for our kids and therefore is for emergency use only.
The parking lot is now open and marked with traffic lanes and spaces for visitors painted in white. Special needs spaces are painted in green. This is an overflow area for the handicapped and those that need to park near the building due to health or age conditions that make walking difficult. The new entry chair lift does not use a key and can be operated much like the one by the office.
Week 53
The parking lot is half complete with the balance projected to be done Friday; we should be able to drive and park on it this Sunday. The concrete on the patio and sidewalks by the front doors is complete, and the book store is almost ready. Most of the carpet is complete. The new Welcome Center has been held up with the new top due to be delivered Friday. Donivan (with a lot of help!) has the two theaters ready with lights and sound. The Looking Glass Theater will not have seats on opening day as they are scheduled to ship July 12 and be delivered and installed before July 18. The escalators, chair lift and elevator are scheduled for re-inspection on July 8. Each only had a couple small items that did not pass on the first inspection. The landscape, sod and sign work will begin Tuesday with the hope it can be completed before our July 11 opening.
Week 52
Softplay installed the second slide which will be very exciting for the kids – its dark inside as you speed down the tube. This week Wacky World is here to install the wall murals with its 2D and 3D elements. The chair lift by the entry way is installed, and the elevator has been released for our use as we move stuff into the building. The floor tile around the Welcome Center is done and they started on the floor tile from our current foyer over to the new foyer doors. The A/V firm is placing elements in Looking Glass Theatre and Worship Falls. The guard rails are coming together. The stainless steel top in the Portico café was installed and that released the plumber and electrician to get their connections ready for the equipment. The base coat of asphalt was installed on Wednesday, which released the sidewalk crew to do the west side. They hope to get the balance of work done on Friday. If you have not seen the building at night then you have not noticed the exterior lights are now attached and working. The city is scheduled to be on site Friday to check things out; we are hoping for a temporary occupancy permit which will allow us to begin un-boxing items and putting them in place while the general contractor finishes and cleans the space for our use.
Week 51
The Welcome Center cabinets are in place and await their custom top. The chair lift by the front entry doors is well under way. Sound panels for the Looking Glass Theatre, Sports Room, and Worship Falls have been started. Light poles have been set in the parking lot. The terracotta metal edge has been placed around the canopy edges. The elevator company started the city inspection process and the 100 hours of operation on the escalators prior to the final adjustments. The painting firm is putting a second coat of paint on the walls. The metal insert panels have been placed in the ceiling grid in the foyer. The sprinkler firm has tested the system at high pressure to ensure it holds and there are no leaks. The expanded bookstore is coming together well; they have the slat wall material in place and painted. The slide firm arrived Monday to install the slides. The first one is done and I tested it last night – I believe the kids will love it. The city is to inspect the escalators today and the fire alarm system will be also have its final testing. All the roof top heating and air conditioning units are online and being balanced for air flow. The fire door in the book store will be put online today and adjusted. Part of the temporary wall could be removed before the weekend. The classroom cleaning is scheduled to start this Friday. Next week Wacky World will be here to start the decoration of the walls around the doors in the hallways. All the café equipment has arrived; when the café is ready it will be installed.
The asphalt overlay and patching need to wait until the base coat on the west side of the new building is placed. Therefore we need your help in prayer that God would not allow it to rain on the job site until the work is done. Be specific in your prayers – we only need the job site to be dry.
Week 50
The light pole bases and trenches have been dug to get the wire between the poles. The remainder of the outside skin has been coated with the weather proofing material so the metal panels to be installed. All entry way glass and the handicapped door operators have been installed. The second floor doors and hardware are coming together. The expanded book store slowed us a bit while we waited for the wall between the buildings to be removed, but that is now done. The ceiling and lights in the expanded bookstore are being installed. The floor tile around the Welcome Center is being laid. The elevator company has returned to install the final items to get the equipment approved by the city. The escalators must run 100 hours before final adjustments can be made; that may start this week. The café cabinets have been installed and the epoxy floor begun with the plan that that floor will complete and cured by Monday. The installation of large café equipment can begin by the first of the week. The company installing the slides is scheduled to begin on Monday. All second floor classroom cabinets are being installed, and most of the appliances are installed. The above ceiling inspection in the bookstore and foyer is scheduled for Friday, which will turn them loose to get the finishing things done. We still hope the weather allows us to do the asphalt work next week and get the sidewalk and patio concrete areas poured. If you have not seen the new sign along 55th street you should take a look; it just needs the top cap added to be complete. This week the yellow house to the west was removed. Our staff installed some brackets for television monitors and shelving in the classrooms. The security company has all but a few on the security cameras mounted. A company that was been hired to balance the air flow in the new building has started their work.
Week 49
The glass workers installed the glass lid on the entry and are working on the edge trimming. Tile Works has completed the bulk of the tiles on the upper entry and the main foyer stairs; they are also doing the café area and should start the circle around the welcome center this week. Security cameras are being added to the classrooms and public areas. The welcome tree was painted last week and this week they are adding the light fixtures. We received most of the café equipment on Tuesday; most of the appliances arrived Wednesday. Washers have been installed and the dryers will be installed shortly. The fire alarm company has been testing the voice evacuation system this week, which features a recorded female voice telling everyone to exit the building. Fly ash has been added to the driveway and tilled into the soil. Based on the weather, the asphalting will start next Monday and continue in sections until complete; we will all need to park on the south side of 55th street soon to allow this to be done. The large trash container in the parking lot has been moved to the loading dock; the trash container by the kitchen door has also moved to the loading dock area. The existing west foyer and bookstore walls have been removed and they are building back the new walls in that area. We should have sprinkler and fire alarm systems online and working by the end of the week. The sheet metal and HVAC vendors are taking out the temporary filters and getting the units ready to on go online.
Week 48
Last week they began jack hammering to prepare for the concrete ramp poured Monday between the two buildings; concrete was also poured in the old foyer door ways that were removed and on the stairs in the hallway by Donivan’s office. The contractors started putting the sheet rock in place by the office doors and Marco’s office. They continue removing the brick wall in the existing foyer. The art room received the concrete stain, and the Looking Glass Theatre risers received an epoxy coating; once painted the room will be ready for the seating. The folding chairs for the new addition and for the expanded adult classrooms have arrived. The lower level classrooms are almost done; the carpet is covered with plastic to help keep it clean as the painter does a finish coat. The electrician has most of the devices in place with timer light switches and tamper resistant plugs in all locations. The café cabinets and children’s check-in areas are being installed. The tree above the welcome center has been painted and the electricians will be putting lights in next week. The upper entry level floor tile is nearly done and they will begin the main floor area shortly. Stair hand rails have been added. The temporary air filters are being removed so systems can be turned on and the air balanced. Outside they poured more concrete and are preparing to put fly ash in the driveway so that the asphalt can be done around the building. More sidewalks on the west side have yet to be done, but that will not take long.
Week 47
Last Thursday after inspection by city and fire departments, they started putting in ceiling tiles on the first floor. They continued installing first floor doors; window glass in the classroom walls is complete. The guard rail around the retaining wall is almost done. The second floor floors are ready for staining and epoxy coatings. They started installing the café cabinets. The black dry fall paint in the foyer is finished. The second floor ceiling grid is finished and the border tiles installed. They also started installing bathroom fixtures on the second floor. The first floor classrooms have been carpeted. The plumber began installing sinks in the classrooms. Ceramic tile on the foyer stairs leading to the entry has been laid. Yesterday they began installing the glass lid over the entry. The fire alarm voice evacuation system was tested throughout the building, and the elevator fire alarm items have been added. The electrician started installing receptacles and light switches. The seating raisers are built in the Looking Glass Theater and the epoxy coating of the stairs has been started. The stage in Worship Falls is built and ready for the wiring boxes before the plywood skin is added. The existing foyer wall has been removed and is ready for them to start building the walls that will connect the two buildings. The second floor hallways in the existing building are sheet rocked, painted and steel stairs welded into place; the ramp is ready to be started. They have worked around the rain to do some exterior work around the south door to the bookstore. The rain continues to help the sod on both sides of the building without using the irrigation system every day.
Week 46
The rain this week delayed some work on the exterior of the building. The steel firm started the guard rail along the retaining wall at the back of the parking lot. The rain is helping with the sod on both sides of the building, but we had a truck drive over a couple of the corners that will need to be repaired.
Glass doors have been installed on the north exterior of the building. Painters started the black dry fall paint on the south and west foyer ceiling. The ceiling grid is well under way on the second floor. Many ceiling light fixtures and HVAC grilles have been installed on the second floor. The second floor hallways into the new building have been cut, modifications to second floor classroom doors have been made and the sheet rock and mudding are well under way. The foyer doors and glass behind the temporary wall have been removed. The epoxy floor in the second floor bathrooms are getting done. They are getting ready to stain the Mystery Room. The structural steel for the platform in Worship Falls is well under way, and the seating raisers are getting plywood flooring in the Looking Glass Theatre. The A/V firm has the theatrical lighting bars in place in Worship Falls and started the lighting bars in the Looking Glass Theater. We had some ceiling inspections on first floor which allows ceiling tiles to be put in place. The doors to the first floor classrooms are being installed. The glass firm added the glass wall and doors to the expanded bookstore. They also started putting the glass in the classroom windows along the hallway. The low voltage wiring firm started labeling and testing the wire they have installed. The fire alarm firm continues to get all devices wired. The firm putting in the controls for the heating/cooling and lighting circuits has most of the room thermostats wired and installed as well as the connections to the roof top units.
Week 45
Curbs were formed and poured on the north and west sides, and sod laid in several areas. A trench drain has been torn out, and highway concrete mix poured.
Sheet rock, taping, mudding, painting and ductwork continued in the entry way and foyer areas. Door frames and entry area glass were installed. The ceiling grid and lights are in place over the Child Check-in area. First floor bathroom fixtures, floor tile, classroom cabinets and counter tops were installed. Sump pumps and alarms were added to the elevator and escalator pits. A temporary wall was built in the current foyer so the glass wall and bricks can be removed.
Lights and risers were added in the Looking Glass Theatre, light fixtures and insulation was added to the risers. The raised platform for Worship Falls’ control booth was added. The second floor hallways now have light fixtures and lights, sprinkler heads, and the wiring for fan powered boxes has begun. A hallway has been closed off; there are now holes through the walls connecting the two buildings.
