The Week of May 31, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 16-18 + John 11:1-28
Monday, June 1, 2009

Isaiah 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

Good Shepherd:
The sheep in your flock are in a variety of experiences. Some are strong in the Lord, others are weak in faith, but some are not even part of the fold yet. It is for these especially that I pray.
You have an impartial care for your sheep. I thank you that the weakest is as dear to you as the most mature. I am apt to lag behind, prone to wander, wont to grow weary. But from all these dangers and infirmities you protect me with your arm of power. Now go further and bring __________ and __________ into the fold!
Can I just pause and praise you this summer? When you find a new-born soul, like a young lamb, you nourish it until it becomes discipled. You find weak faith ready to faint and fail, and console it and renew its strength. All the little ones you gather to yourself if they die before their time.
You have such a tender heart of care! In your lifetime on earth you drew men and women unto yourself and under your wings. Do so today now that you dwell in heaven. Bring together the meek and the convicted, the timid and the feeble, the fearful and the fainting.
Thank you for gathering me to yourself, your truth, your blood, your love, and your church. What effective grace! And how often have you restored and revived me since I got saved. How shall I love you enough? How shall I serve you worthily? Help me make your name great to the ends of the earth (and in my own neighborhood). Add to your mercies this one other: that I might have a heart to love you more as I ought. In Jesus’ same I ask it. Amen.

TUESDAY— CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 19-21 + John 11:29-57
Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Hebrews 13:15 By [Jesus] therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually,

Almighty and Ever-living God:
You teach us to make prayers and supplications and give thanks for all people. So we humbly ask you to accept our sacrifice of praise. Receive our prayers, offered up to your Divine Majesty. Inspire our class, and the whole church, with the spirit of truth, unity and harmony. Grant us that all those who confess the name of Christ can agree as to the truth of your word, and live in unity and godly love for one another.
We beg you also to save and protect all Christian politicians, so that under them we can be godly and quietly governed. Grant that all who are put in authority will truly and impartially administer justice, punish wickedness and vice, and maintain true virtue and right.
Give grace, O Father, to all our pastors, missionaries and ministers of the gospel, so that both by their life and by their doctrine they can lay out your true and living word, rightly dividing your truth, and administering your ordinances.
To all your people give heavenly grace, especially to our congregation on Sunday, so that with meek heart and reverent spirit we will hear and receive your word. That is the only way we can really serve you in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives.
I humbly ask you for your goodness. Comfort and sustain all those who are in trouble, pain or sorrow in this transitory life. If they have some need or adversity, allow them to rejoice that it creates a dependence on you. Let us live by your faith and fear. Give us grace to follow the good examples of our disciplers so with them we can be partakers of revival together. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 22-24 + John 12
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Nahum 1:12  Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.

O Heavenly Father:
Thank you for placing a limit on my tribulation. George Mueller said that while you smite with one hand you support with the other. Sometimes I ask through my sigh, “When will the end be?” Help me to remember you are
Acts 14:22  Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
Help me to quietly wait and patiently endure. If I wait but I murmur, I have failed you. I lose the reward for enduring. Likewise if I endure but show impatience, I have failed. I want your will instead.
Proverbs 22:15  Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
I thank you for removing the rod as soon as it has served its use. Maybe once you have driven away my foolishness these strokes will stop. Otherwise, the affliction is sent for my testing so that my responses might glorify God. In that case, don’t end the trial until my witness has borne you praise! I want you to get out of me all the honor my life can possibly yield.
Who knows how soon a sea of glass will replace my raging billows? Today there may be a great calm. After winnowing, the wheat rests in the barn and the whip is hung up. In a few hours I may be as happy as I now am sorrowful, because it is not hard for you to turn night into day. You control the clouds and can easily clear my skies. Make me a blessing till then. The way ahead is clearer still. Let me sing Hallelujah in anticipation. I ask it all for Jesus’ sake, Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 25-27 + John 13
Thursday, June 4, 2009

Matthew 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

PRAISE Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessèd Redeemer!
Sing, O Earth, His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! hail Him! highest archangels in glory;
Strength and honor give to His holy Name!

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessèd Redeemer!
For our sins He suffered, and bled, and died.
He our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation,
Hail Him! hail Him! Jesus the Crucified.

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessèd Redeemer!
Heav’nly portals loud with hosannas ring!
Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever.
Crown Him! Crown Him! Prophet, and Priest, and King!
Christ is coming! over the world victorious,
Pow’r and glory unto the Lord belong.

Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness.
Praise Him! Praise Him! Ever in joyful song!

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S LIFE

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 28-30 + John 14
Friday, June 5, 2009

John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.

Dear God and Gracious Father:
So many times the truth of your word is like a huge cave. I want to enter in, but I cannot explore it alone. The entrance is clear, bright and enticing, but if I want to go further in I need the assistance of a guide. I don’t want to get lost in my study of the Bible.
The Holy Spirit knows truth perfectly because he is its author. That’s why you gave him as my guide. Thank you Lord, for leading me into the truths of your word right when I am able to receive them. You never require my understanding of something that is still too high for me to reach and too mature for me to digest. Instead, you lead me from one inner chamber to another, so that I behold the deep things of God in due time, and receive secrets as I am able both to absorb them, apply them and explain them.
What a treasure is available to the mind clothed with humility! I want to know the truth, and yet I am so conscious of my propensity to err. I rejoice today that the Holy Ghost abides in my heart and condescends to act as my personal teacher. I gladly accept his leadership, Lord.
Help me learn “all truth,” so I won’t be out of balance. Let me not become willingly ignorant, because I don’t want to miss a blessing even as much as I don’t want to step into a sin. Since you have given your Spirit as a faithful guide, help me to become a more obedient follower by hearkening to his words. He has a still, small voice, but if I walk in the Spirit today I can follow your lead. Make it so for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 2Chronicles 31-33 + John 15
Saturday, June 6, 2009

Psalm 73:15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.

Gracious God:
It is not always smart to speak my thoughts. If I keep them within they only injure me, but once spoken they often cause harm to others. My complaining and faultfinding can bring disappointment to the whole family of God.
Lord, I repent! Help me watch out for the consequences of what I say to others. Hasty, undigested, and inconsiderate comments cause a lot of trouble. Help me bridle my tongue in those cases.
If I am suspicious of being wrong, help me to be quiet. Hasty opinions of you, especially, are like dangerous campfires among dry stubble. A forest of people is sure to be affected by talk like that. That will give them reason for even greater distrust of your power.
Yet many times my seething inner thoughts cause me agony and bring me into bitterness. Help my heart find eternity where you dwell. Enable me to look within the veil, and stand before your throne, and get a divine perspective on my problems. For I know that a wider outlook will change my point of view and bring peace.
Psalm 73:24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
False philosophy tortures the mind. Give me true faith. Even wise men and women ruin themselves unless your grace prevents it. So I ask to be led and agree to follow you. All my former mistakes are a blessing if they will but drive me to you. When I come to the end of my wits, that is the beginning of getting wise.
Afterward! I can put up with the present problem when I foresee the future reception in glory. Give me such vision today for Jesus’ sake and praise. Amen.

The Week of May 24, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 28-29 + John 8:1-30
Monday, May 25, 2009

Song of Solomon 7:13 The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.

O My Beloved, Jesus My Spouse:
I desire to give to you all that I produce. My heart has all manner of pleasant fruits, both new and old. They are laid up for you.
I have new fruits. I want to feel new life in revival. I want to see new abundance from my witness. I want to beget new children of God. I want to have new joy and gratitude for all you have done for me. I want to make new decisions and carry them out in new faith.
I have some old fruits, too. There is my first love (a very choice fruit). There is my first faith by which, though I am nothing and have nothing, I become possessor of all things. There is my first soul won for Christ. There is my joy when I first met the Lord. Let me revive it. Help me share it with __________ or __________, even today.
I have my old remembrances of your promises. You have been faithful to me! When I am sick you make my bed soft. In deep waters you buoy me up. In the fiery furnace you walk with me. I have many old fruits because of many past mercies.
My sins I regret, but then I have my repentances. I wept my way to the cross and saw the merits of your blood. I have fruits old and new, but here is the point of my prayer: they are all laid up for you, Jesus! You are the solitary aim of my soul, and your glory the sole end of all my efforts (Col 1:29).
Jesus, you have watered the soil of my garden with your bloody sweat. I display your fruits when you are with me. My all is yours, and yours alone, My Beloved. Amen.

TUESDAY— CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 1-3 + John 8:31-59
Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Ephesians 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Almighty All-Powerful God:
You do not give like we do. We give a handful of change to the beggar at the exit ramp. You give wealth by handfuls on purpose. Solomon asked for wisdom; you gave him wealth and power. This is your divine habit. You redeem your promises, but when you could pay in silver, you dole them out in gold.
Why should we think you will be stingy with us? We have a great King, we should ask for great things. We need grace to refresh our souls. We need floods of revival poured out on our dry ground.
Hey, Leviathan sinners! Here is an ocean of mercy. Yo, elephantine rebels! Here is an ark big enough to hold your fat flubber and float you above the waters of judgment. You in our congregation! Your sins of pride reach to the clouds of heaven, and your feet of lust are mired in the muds of hell. The sacred space is large enough to hide even you. Even you!
The Lord is great in mercy. Who would not ask so generous a God for forgiveness right now? He does not dim the luster of his grace by finding fault with the seeking sinner.
Do not add to all your other sins the thought that God has lied. Do not let us distrust the word of the Lord. Let’s all come humbly, reverently, obediently and immediately to the foot of the cross and the face of the Savior.
View him as lifted up on high. He is the atoning sacrifice. Look to his streaming wounds, from his hands, his head, his side. Behold his brow still covered with crimson droplets caused from a thorny crown, pressed down by men. Look to him and live. Lord, enlarge our vision of your Son! Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 4-6 + John 9:1-20
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

O LORD God:
Revival is a sovereign work of yours, and not a plan of man. To give it or withhold it is purely the prerogative of your Spirit. But whether or not I experience it again, I can eagerly pursue it.
If I am cast away, if you never give me joy again, even then I will never stop looking to you for merciful revival in Jesus Christ. That is the only hope I have. And even if I never receive it, let it at least he said that I sought it. By your grace, I will die with my face toward the cross!
No one perishes who assumes that position. It will never be reported by heaven above or to hell beneath that a soul died unsaved if seeking the Savior. No one can miss revival who seeks it seeing the five wounds of the Savior.
You are the Way, the living way, the only way, the sure way. I will do as the blind man did, and follow you in the way. This is the road of revival because this is the way of grace. May God the Holy Spirit help me as I take this way without delay.
Numbers 14:24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
Make me a Joshua and Caleb! Help me stick to that decision never to return to the worldliness from which I was redeemed. Do not let my carcass fall in the wilderness, like so many of my generation. My face is toward you, Jesus—your promise and your throne. Let me never finally love this evil world, nor bow before its idols. I want, in the end, to be found on the road to revival. I ask this to Jesus’ praise and God’s glory. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 7-9 + John 9:21-41
Thursday, May 28, 2009

Titus 2:7,10 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: …that they may adorn the doctrine of
God our Saviour in all things.
ARISE, the kingdom is at hand, the King is drawing nigh;
Arise with joy, thou faithful band, to meet the Lord most high!
Look up, ye souls, weighed down with care, the Sovereign is not far;
Look up, faint hearts, from your despair, behold the Morning Star!

Look up, ye drooping hearts, today, the King is very near;
O cast your griefs and fears away, for, lo, your help is here!
Hope on, ye broken hearts, at last the King comes in His might;
He loved us in the ages past when we lay wrapped in night.

O rich the gifts Thou bringest us, Thyself made poor and weak;
O love beyond compare that thus can foes and sinners seek!
For this we raise a gladsome voice on high to Thee alone,
And evermore with thanks rejoice before Thy glorious throne.

—Johann Rist, Sabbatische Seelenlust (Lüneburg: 1651)

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S LIFE

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 10-12 + John 10:1-21
Friday, May 29, 2009

John 13:10 Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean,

Most Glorious God and Master:
Two things the high priest had to do before he could enter the holy of holies. First, he had to be sprinkled with blood. I have this, for John says,
Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
The second requisite for the priest to be able to serve was washing with water. Again, as Paul puts it,
Hebrews 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
Holy Spirit, be the spirit of access to me now! Just as Jesus stooped to wash the feet of his disciples, so stop by here and wash me inwardly.
1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
I don’t want my communion to get broken between here and heaven. Dying and entering your presence will change my condition, but it will not alter my standing. Let me stand today within the veil to offer sacrifices that are well-pleasing to you. Let me stand today in the community as one who knows God, and therefore can relate people to God, so they can become children of God.
Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Jesus, do your work today, of preparing me for this task. You have made me completely acceptable by your cross. Now cleanse my conscience and make me completely confident and able by faith in your life. Do this for Jesus. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 2 Chronicles 13-15 + John 10:22-42
Saturday, May 30, 2009

Psalm 118:14 The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

Strongest LORD and Savior:
I want everyone to know, from beginning to end, on the whole and in every part, that I entirely owe my salvation to you. Let all the redeemed “say so!”
I cannot agree with any doctrine that puts the crown on the wrong head (like the cults do), or defrauds my glorious King of his rightful place and praise. The LORD has done it all, for Jehovah = Jesus. In Christ God is all, and in all (2 Cor 5:19; Gal 3:17).
Sometimes you give a secret strength to your people. They have salvation but question it, and their doubts steal their song. But when you are my strength and song, my salvation is fully realized.
The dwelling place of the saved should be the temple of praise. It is only right that the righteous should praise you. Let me not be silent. I must not have salvation without joy, or joy without a tongue to testify, or testimony without the fruits of successful witness.
Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
Jesus was rejected by human authorities. They considered him to be nothing, though he was Lord of all. But you put him in the position of highest honor and greatest usefulness. In raising him from the dead you exalted him as the Head.
Jesus, you are the living stone, the tried stone, the elect and precious “chief cornerstone” of my life. In all things let me give you the preeminence, especially in my thoughts and emotions. That way you will forever remain the foundation, giving me stability and strength. You are the glory of all my joys. Faith sees, and it is indeed marvelous in my eyes (v 23). Amen.

The Week of May 17, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 10-12 + John 5:1-23
Monday, May 18, 2009

Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

God of Light and Glory:
You are bountiful by nature and to give is your delight. Your gifts are precious beyond measure, and grace means they are as a freely given as the light of the sun. Grant salvation to __________ and to __________!
You give grace to the lost because you will it. You give grace to the redeemed because of your covenant. You give grace to the called because of your promise. You give grace to believers because they seek it. You give grace to sinners because they will die in an eternal hell without it.
Since you give grace abundantly, give it seasonally, and bring me into a summer of harvest based on my witness! Then grant me comforting grace, preserving grace, sanctifying grace, directing grace, instructing grace and assisting grace. By your Holy Spirit you can pour this into my soul without ceasing.
Sickness may arise, but you give grace. Financial collapse may come, but you give grace. A grave may be faced, but you give grace. The tiny conjunction and in this verse is a diamond rivet that fastens my present to the future, because grace and glory always go together! They are married and no man can put them asunder. You will never deny me glory if you have bestowed on me grace.
Glory is just grace in full bloom. It is grace in a tuxedo. It is grace exponentially squared and perfected. How soon I will gain glory I cannot tell. Maybe before this month is out!
I want to see the glory of Jesus even now. I want the Spirit to give me the glory of the Son for the sake of the Father, that more and more souls will be saved. O rare promise! Fulfill it this week in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

TUESDAY— CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 13-15 + John 5:24-47
Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Hebrews 3:7-8 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

Almighty and Everlasting God:
We come in obedience to your call. We come to fulfill our office as believers who are kings and priests. What can children be but bold in their Father’s presence?
Our eye of faith may be dim, but we enter into your temple for prayer. Even though we have sinned, access is open to repentance. We are grieved with the sense of our apathy, mediocrity and stagnation. This is why we come, even now. We are minished and brought low (Psa. 107:39), but we come.
We come by way of atonement. We have boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus (Heb 10:19). The high priest of old brought blood because the veil was there. We bring it now because the veil is gone. It gives us liberty to advance.
We come in an unfailing way, by a new and living way (Heb 10:20). It is a way always fresh because of a Lamb newly slain. Jesus died millennia ago, but his worth is the same now as it was the moment it occurred, so we come. The way is always newly laid by the cross, so make it new to our hearts and never stale. The way itself guides, brings and bears us near. This way gives us life with which to come. Life is in the way itself.
We come in a dedicated way, which [Jesus] hath consecrated for us (Heb 10:20). It is a Christly way, because there is no coming except by the incarnate God. God with human skin on is our way to God. His substitutionary death is our pathway. We come to God by his representation.
We do not pray without Christ, sing without Christ, nor work without Christ. Help us perform our holy function in the right way. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 16-18 + John 6:1-35
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Isaiah 59:8 The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

Heavenly Father!
Have I found the way of peace? Then make me earnest in telling other people about it. Too many believers have become deaf mutes. They are deaf to the spiritual cries of others and silent about giving either instruction or encouragement about how to find God.
“Which way to the cross?” Why do I not tell them? I know so much more than I say. Do I not hear their cry? It may be masked as a moan for something material, but I know what they really need—the gospel.
They are lost in finding it. Too often I am lost to give it. I am content to occupy a seat on Sunday, but never go out to share what I have found. If I know the way I should show the way as I go the way, and
2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
God, make me ready to point the way to heaven to everybody, whether they ask to know it or not. Maybe my description of the path will awaken their desire to get un-lost. We introduce people to our friends sometimes just because they are standing there. So Jesus, I want to be an effective influence in introducing others to you. If I show them the way to the cross, maybe they will be encouraged to walk in it.
“Turn right and keep going straight.” Only one turn is needed: when you come to the cross, but it must be a complete turning. Then, whether I get to Canaan or not, I will not go back to Egypt. I will die facing God and his grace, because ultimately, that is true revival! Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 19-21 + John 6:36-71
Thursday, May 21, 2009

Titus 2:1,5 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:…that the word of God be not blasphemed.

LEAD on, O King eternal, the day of march has come;
Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home.
Through days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong;
And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song.

Lead on, O King eternal, till sin’s fierce war shall cease,
And holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace.
For not with swords’ loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums;
With deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes.

Lead on, O King eternal, we follow, not with fears,
For gladness breaks like morning where’er Thy face appears.
Thy cross is lifted over us, we journey in its light;
The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might.

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S LIFE

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 22-24 + John 7:1-26
Friday, May 22, 2009

Matthew 26:52-53 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

Lord of Angels and Demons:
Even in your humiliation you were still sovereign Lord of everything, but especially of the unseen world and the armies that populate it. Let me learn from you, Master, to reckon on invisible assistance. I do not trust in that which is seen by the eye or heard by the ear. I respect the spiritual agencies that evade my senses but are seen by the eye of faith.
Hebrews 1:14 Are [angels] not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
Lord Jesus, you can raise me up friends on earth. But if you do not do so, I will trust you to send abler friends from heaven to my aid. There is no need for me to rashly reach for the sword and cut off somebody’s ear (like Peter did in verse 51). Instead, make me like the nobleman to whom you said,
John 4:48-49 Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
His faith did not just make him seek you in prayer, but made him persistent in prayer. I don’t have to pay attention to spiritual forces as long as I am seeking your spiritual presence. I say, “I cannot let you go unless you save my child,” my spouse, my parent, my friend. Is there anything I can say to get you to save them? My lips are not eloquent but my tears are expressive.
Those who come before you with cold prayers never find peace. Heat my requests in a furnace of desire so they can burn their way to heaven! I distill my soul into this concentrated cry; Holy Ghost, stir me to greater faith. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 25-27 + John 7:27-53
Saturday, May 23, 2009

Psalm 118:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.

Merciful and Mighty God:
My grateful heart loves to hear praising voices. You are good…all the time. Others look good, but you are good. Others are somewhat good, but you are good beyond measure. When my haters treat me badly, it only stirs me up to thank you because you are good. And when I fall short of being good, I bless you because you are good.
Keep me from doubting or distrusting your goodness for a second. Whatever else confuses me, this one fact is certain. The methods you use to carry out your purpose may vary, but your providence always produces good, because your intention is good, because your nature is good.
Mercy is a big part of your goodness, and that entices me because I am sinful. I vary in my obedience, but there is no change in your goodness.
Psalm 118:5-6 I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
My prayer comes from my heart when it comes from my distress. I worship (v 1), I praise (vv 2-4), and I pray (v 5), because all those are components of calling on you. In answer to the prayer of faith you will free me and I will be free indeed (John 8:36). I have no merit, no strength, and no wisdom apart from you. All I can do is call for you to come to my rescue.
I rejoice in your help when it seems everyone has turned against me. You are my defender and advocate, and will always accomplish the divine purpose of grace. Your favor outweighs both my frustrations and my failures, so I will not be afraid. In this I will honor you today for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

The Week of May 10, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 16-18 + John 1:1-25
Monday, May 11, 2009

Jeremiah 8:20  The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

My Jesus My Lord:
Not saved! Do not let this be the plight of anyone I know at the end of this summer. Help me lovingly warn them of judgment to come. I know the way of salvation. I can show it to them in the Bible. They can hear it from our pulpits. It should be explained to them by friends they have in our church. Do not let __________ or __________ neglect the gospel and therefore not be saved.
Holy Spirit, give blessing on your word as I preach it, teach it, and deal with it in devotions—in our sports leagues and other places. Give me times of refreshing from your presence. Let no one who comes to me for help go away without Christ. Let this be the hopeful season; don’t pass them by in the harvest.
Years follow each other into eternity. My last years will soon be here. Do not let anyone go into adulthood that I can catch in their youth, and do not allow any adult to escape that I can catch before death. If prosperity does not cause them to seek you so as to thank you, then maybe affliction will cause them to seek you for deliverance. Let no tears or prayers or sermons be wasted; reach each barren heart through me with your love.
Make it the convenient time for the lost. Prepare me so the explanation of the gospel brings a natural harvest because it rings true. Let them not die unsaved. Help me be wise by being a winner of souls. The time may be short—very short—before the rapture of the church. Jesus is able to save them to the uttermost. Help me consecrate my hours to reaching the lost and seeing the Holy Spirit grant them repentance. Give me a humble faith in Jesus that will expect to see it happen according to your will. Help me act now so that others can believe. I make this plea for Jesus’ sake and because I know it is his desire. Amen.

TUESDAY—CHOOSING INCONVENIENCE

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 19-21 + John 1:26-51
Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Lamentations 3:22-23  It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Oh Almighty God:
We beg you to look on the desires of our hearts. Stretch out the right hand of your majesty to be our defense against the enemy. Our own evil deeds deserve to be punished, but by the comfort of your grace they have been forgiven. We are so grateful for that!
Look on us mercifully as your people, so by your great goodness we can be led by our pastors and preserved from falling into temptation. Guard us both in body and in soul today.
Give us grace in presenting the gospel to others. In your tender love you sent your Son to take our flesh on himself, and so suffer death on the cross as our substitute and sacrifice. He did not go up to joy until he first suffered pain in our place; it’s as if he would not have heaven without us! Help us lead others to this great offer of salvation in the glorious good news. Grant that as we walk in the way of the cross today we can find the lane of life and the path of peace.
Romans 8:18  For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Jesus gave his back to the smiters, and hid not his face from shame on our behalf. Grant us grace to join him, choose inconvenience, and face joyfully any suffering in the mission, in full assurance of the glory that will be revealed.
1 Peter 4:13  But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
Send us new mercies for this, a new day. Let us start over in the Lamb! Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 22-25 + John 2
Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Isaiah 62:4  Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

Heavenly Father and Faithful Lord:
FORSAKEN—is a frightening word. I remember being lost as a little child. The fear was not in the lostness, but in the thought of being abandoned and alone. A valley of misery yawns in that word, FORSAKEN. Yet how many times have I been,

  • FORSAKEN by someone who pledged their love
  • FORSAKEN by a friend who was tried and trusted
  • FORSAKEN by a relative who abandoned having natural affection
  • FORSAKEN by a father or mother who wanted to pursue their pleasure alone

Yet any of this I can patiently bear if only you Lord, will take me up.
I’ve almost forgotten how it felt to be FORSAKEN by God. It was indeed a drink of wormwood and gall. Help me rescue others from being full of a life like that! Help me this day to give someone the light that allows the darkness never to return.
The reverse of FORSAKEN is HEPHZIBAH—“the LORD delighteth in thee.” That’s what I want Lord, because it turns all my mourning into dancing. It gives us revival. Let any Christian who is dreaming that they are FORSAKEN listen to the Lord say,
Hebrews 13:5 I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
In Jesus’ name I ask it, on his merits and to his glory alone. Do not deny such a petition made in accordance with your own will. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 1-3 + John 3
Thursday, May 14, 2009

Titus 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

’TIS so sweet to trust in Jesus, and to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise, and to know, “Thus says the Lord!”
O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me ’neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace.
I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee, precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end.

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

—Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S CROSS

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 4-6 + John 4:1-27
Friday, May 15, 2009

Matthew 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

Master and Mighty Partner:
I may well rejoice to carry a cross your shoulders bore before mine. If you, my Master said, I thirst, then I cannot expect to drink every day from the bottled spring water or the pre-chilled water fountain.
No, my look at your cross prepares me for what I can endure for the sake of the advancement of your kingdom, and out of love to the King. You were innocent, and yet you were disrespected. No wonder then that every now and then I am irritated.
James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
There is a gnawing disease that eats at my heart, but you took my sicknesses (Matt 8:17). Your cup was more bitter than mine. Help me gird myself up, and suffer with you without complaint. Why should I compound my sin by murmuring and complaining? Let me resolve this summer to shun no denials, but rather court them if they will more conform me to your image.
The power to suffer for someone else, the capacity to be self-denying (even to an extreme) in order to accomplish some great calling for God, this is a thing to be sought after, and has to be gained before my mission is really done. Appetite was the door to sin back in the Garden, so it is only right that I should be put to pain at the point of my wants and unfulfilled desires. My sinful tongue, blistered by the fever of sin, would have burned forever had not your tongue been tormented with thirst. Bring me a mind to be willing to suffer simply for the sake of love to you, even if nothing else be accomplished. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 1 Chronicles 7-9 + John 4:28-54
Saturday, May 16, 2009

Psalm 73:1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.

Holy Lord and Glorious God:
You are good all the time, and nothing else but good to me. You cannot act unjustly or ever be unkind. Your goodness is beyond successful contradiction and without compromise.
This is a firm anchor when I am troubled, when storms arise from things I don’t understand. Whatever may or may not be the truths about these events, there are certainties in your hand. They may not be within my grasp, but you hold them, and I cling to you. That keeps me from being carried away by hurricanes of confusion.
Lord no matter how confused I am, let me never think badly of you! No Jesus, if I cannot understand you, still let me never doubt you. You are good to those whom you have made good in Christ, and have renewed their heart.
Psalm 73:2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
There is a great battle within my soul, because while all the time you are good, I must confess my sin. Can I expect a share of your grace? Yes, I do share it, but I often do not act like someone who has received it.
If I see only the present and forget the future, I soon grow envious and discontent. Errors of heart soon affect my conduct. When I doubt your righteousness, my own integrity begins to waver. Strengthen me in the inner man. Wisdom is expensive, but if I buy it I no longer have to fret over anything. You have shown me what the end will be. Simply make me more fit for eternity. This is the prize, the goal, and my desire. Give me grace for growth. Sink my soul deeper into you. Make me cling tighter onto you. Help me climb higher up for you. Do it all for your own glory and praise. Amen.

The Week of May 3, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: 1 Kings 19-22 + Luke 22:1-35
Monday, May 4, 2009

Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Holy Master and Loving Savior:
God told Jonah to go up to Nineveh and preach the word. Jonah hated those people, so he went down to Joppa to escape responsibility.
Are there times when I shirk giving a witness? Lord, search my heart. If the witness would work, then the consequence for my conduct is that I lose your presence and the sense of your love. No wonder I struggle for security.
I thank you today that when I serve you, you are with me. Even if I have the whole world against me, it doesn’t matter. But when I turn back from serving you, from ministry, from witnessing to __________ or to __________, and seek my own way, I am just like a plane without a pilot.
Oh Lord, what has happened to me? How could I be so foolish as to shun any opportunity, and thereby lose the beaming joy of your face? This is too high a price. Help me return to my first love!
Another consequence when I shirk my spiritual duties is that I lose all peace of mind. A soiree into sin destroys my inner peace. Like Jonah, I lose everything I could have turned to and cured my anxiety. I cannot plead the promise of your protection when I am not right in your ways.
I am reaping my own deeds. I am filled with my own ways. I want to stop playing Jonah and get out of this hot mess. It is much harder to shun the will and the work and the witness of God than to immediately surrender, yield my will, and obey. Jonah lost time because he had to go preach after all. Give me grace to go at your first call. Do this because Jesus is worthy. Amen.

TUESDAY— CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 1-3 + Luke 22:36-71
Tuesday, May 5, 2009

Joshua 7:9  For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

What will you do for your great name if we are cut back? What will you do for your great name if we fall into sin, or just fall into stagnation?
Psalm 116:9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.
If your saints go down to Satan in droves, who will walk before the Lord in the land of the living? We want to be able to honor you and not lay back in shame. Our spiritual fathers and disciplers,
Psalm 22:5  They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
Make us partakers of the same favor when we cry out to you and make you our trust. You have never said, Seek my face, in vain. Let it not be said that such poor servants as we have sought your face, but have not found you. Often have we received mercy as we returned to prayer. Often has it drawn our souls nearer to you. Often have we been comforted in the midst of our sorrows, and taken-out fresh supplies of grace according to our needs from your treasuries of mercy in Christ Jesus our Lord. Shall the door of these treasures be shut to us now? Shall we receive no more favors from the hand of our God, when you have previously dealt them out so plentifully to us?
Give us the like blessings today, and also to everyone from our class, from our church, and of our missionaries who cry unto you. You are our God and your benevolence is well known. Increase your fame as you increasingly meet our increasing need of you! We plead with you based on the merits of the blood of Jesus Christ, and not because we are deserving. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 4-6 + Luke 23:1-28
Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Philippians 4:6-7  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Christ Jesus My Lord:
Why do I let anxiety keep gnawing at my heart? It weakens my power to focus, to help myself, and especially my ability to glorify you. A heart full of care keeps me from seeing anything clearly! It’s like I take off my glasses, breathe the hot breath of anxiety on them, and then put them on only to see steam. I’ll never see clearly as long as I fog-up my glasses with worry.
Make me calm, quiet and self-possessed so I can do the right thing! Make me “all there” in time of trial. Give me presence of mind through the presence of your Spirit. If I forget to pray then it is no wonder I worry. That’s when I do the first thing that comes to mind (usually the worst thing that could be done) instead of waiting on you, and trustfully believing you so I can do what you have shown me to do as in the sight of God. Worry is fatal to revival.
My cares are multiplied. Once I become anxious and fretful I am never able to calculate my problems accurately. Cares always multiply on those who are “care-full.” Once I give in to worry I find another crop around the corner.
When I indulge the habit of anxiety it takes over my life. Pretty soon life is not worth living (nor should it be without you). If my worries are manifold, let my prayers be manifold more this week! Help me turn everything that is a care into a prayer. That’s the way to revival! Let my stresses become the raw material of my prayer power, because then I can turn lead into gold, and weave spiritual treasures out of earthly annoyances. Today I baptize every worry into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and so make it a blessing. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 7-9 + Luke 23:29-56
Thursday, May 7, 2009
Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
RISE up, O men of God! Have done with lesser things.
Give heart and mind and soul and strength
To serve the King of kings.
Rise up, O men of God! The kingdom tarries long.
Bring in the day of brotherhood and end the night of wrong.

Rise up, O men of God! The church for you doth wait,
Her strength unequal to her task; rise up and make her great!
Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where His feet have trod.
As brothers of the Son of Man, rise up, O men of God!

—William P. Merrill, 1911

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S LIFE

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 10-12 + Luke 24:1-26
Friday, May 8, 2009

Mark 16:7  But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Glorious God:
There are appointed places you meet your disciples, and I know you always keep your appointments.
•    You promised to meet me at the mercy-seat—thank you for saving my soul
•    You promised to meet me in public worship—thank you for my church and its pastors
•    You promised to meet me in the ordinances—thank you for the opportunity to share the Lord’s Supper with my spiritual family
•    You promised to meet me in your word—thank you for my disciplers, my HomeTeam leaders, and this daily reading schedule
•    You promised to meet me in prayer—thank you for this prayer guide
If I stay away from those meeting places, it is my own fault I don’t feel your presence. Make me place you first in fellowship because, “You go before me.” Your heart is already with your people today. Your delight is in what I do to respond to your plan. You are never slow to meet me as I arrive at the place you want me.
But you only reveal yourself to those who come-after you, because “There shall ye see him.” What a sight for sore eyes! When I see Jesus I am filled with joy and peace, because you do everything according to your promises (“as he said unto you”).
Help me really catch those last five words and be assured that you will forever do what you’ve promised to do in Jesus’ holy name. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 2 Kings 13-15 + Luke 24:27-53
Saturday, May 9, 2009

Psalm 72:13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.

O Lord My Mighty God:
Who would not trust a King so good that he pledges himself to the care of the poor and needy? A child’s cry touches your heart, and you are my heavenly Father. If I can do no more than squeeze out a liquid prayer in a tear, it brings me to your attention. Let me place myself in even greater communion with you. I can look to you, because you are looking after me.
Psalm 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
Make me eager to look for the people you want me to reach, because then I will see you do wondrous things through me. The fox and the lion have joined forces against me, but the Great Shepherd will defeat them and rescue the defenseless. My soul is hunted by the temptations of Satanic deceptions. I will run to your bosom for shelter and be safe in the arms of love.
Luke 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
My fellowship in my church is not unimportant. The beginning may be small, but the change you are making in me is astonishing! Let the saving power of the name of Jesus make my church my rallying point. Let my lift up his name together with others so it will be exalted and glorified.
You are this earth’s greatest blessing. If I want to bless others I have to bless them in your name. Your name is glorious; make that glory fill the whole earth. I await expectantly your return, because that future hope is what purifies me now. My heart yearns daily for so great a future and I cry,
Revelation 22:20 Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
