The Week of March 29, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: Judges 13-15 + Luke 3:20-38
Monday, March 30, 2009

Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Supreme God and Loving Father:
How often I feel like my mouth is not able to express my heart in prayer. Let that same sense of inadequacy draw me to the throne of grace with even greater boldness. O that my words could more nearly tell the longing of my heart for the lost, but if not, I do have an assistant in this great work of prayer.
Romans 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Give me a burning desire and wholeheartedness to know you in prayer, and for _______ and _______ to know you through my presentation of the gospel.
Romans 6:17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
I cannot obey perfectly, but I can obey from the heart. Help me be obedient at every prompting of your Spirit to witness and to testify of Jesus.
Matthew 5:6,8  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Make me hunger and thirst for you in inner prayer with a sincere (pure) heart. Make those I witness to hunger and thirst to have forgiveness of sins.
Psalm 119:80  Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.
Where my longings are is where I am in the sight of God. Make me sincere in my desire for you and in my earnestness in prayer for others. Then will I be perfect, upright and undefiled. Give me souls as our church grows! Make me your tool to witness. Make it so today, Lord Jesus. Amen.

TUESDAY—40 DAYS OF PRAYER FOR THE KURDS

Chronological Reading: Judges 16-18 + Luke 4:1-22
Tuesday, March 31, 2009

1 Thessalonians 5:17  Pray without ceasing.

Gracious Lord and Loving God:
You assure us there is no time today we cannot pray. There is not one unholy moment in any hour. Wherever we seek you with a true heart, we will find you by prayer. Whenever we cry you hear.
The veil before the mercy seat has been torn away. Cherubims blocked the way to the tree of life (Gen 3:24), but our access to you now is undisputed and continuous. The monarch Ahasuerus would not allow anyone to approach him unless he called them (Esther 4:11), but the King of kings has called for his people to approach in prayer at any time. You stretch-out your golden scepter of grace to us, and it is never withdrawn.
The dead of night is not too late. The crack of dawn is not too early. At noon you are not too busy. When evening comes you are not too weary. To pray continually is a precious permit to pour-out our hearts at all times before you.
The doors to your temple are never shut. Nothing can set a barrier between our soul in supplication and our Savior. For this Lord, we give you thanks. Because now we have a most secret weapon, a supply and source of strength. The road is ever open to the resources of your grace!
Lord, let us send up the dove of prayer throughout this day. We seek the olive branch of your peace amidst our trials and busy-ness. Have regard to our pleadings. Remember all the things that we, your servants (both near and far) today need to fulfill your will with our lives. You wait to be gracious till we pray.
Bless those we have sent abroad just as you bless us, Lord. Let us mutually strengthen each other by prayer. You have opened the doors to the storehouses of grace. Today we seek your blessing for Jesus’ sake alone. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: Judges 19-21 + Luke 4:23-44
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Ezra 9:6  And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.

Lord, My Father:
You O Lord are in heaven, but I am on earth. My being is but yesterday and my foundation is in the dust. It is only in you that I live and move and have my being. If you withhold your breath, then I die.
I mourn before you Lord, because of my pride and vanity of mind, the violence of my passions, my earthly-mindedness and love of this world, my sensuality and indulgence of the flesh, my carnal security and ungratefulness in plenteous mercies, my fretfulness and impatience, and my sinful defection in time of trouble. I confess my neglect of duty and lack of love to God, my unbelief and hardness of heart, my slothfulness and decay in spirituality, the dishonor I have brought to your name, and all my missteps toward my fellow creatures.
How often have they been repeated—both before I knew God savingly, and even since. I committed them against much light and I have sinned against much love. After many rebukes, both through the Bible and through your providence, and after many comforts from the gospel and the Spirit of God, I have nevertheless done all these things.
Job 40:4  Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
Lamentations 3:29  He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.
I put my face on the floor to worship you and plead for merciful forgiveness, while trusting in the merits of Jesus Christ my Lord. Make him more and more to me. Make him my all. Make him completely my sufficiency. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: Ruth 1-2 + Luke 5
Thursday, April 2, 2009

John 13:7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

TRIALS dark on every hand, and we cannot understand
All the ways that God could lead us to that blessèd promised land;
But He guides us with His eye, and we’ll follow till we die,
For we’ll understand it better by and by.

Temptations, hidden snares often take us unawares,
And our hearts are made to bleed for a thoughtless word or deed;
And we wonder why the test when we try to do our best,
But we’ll understand it better by and by.

We are often destitute of the things that life demands,
Want of food and want of shelter, thirsty hills and barren lands;
We are trusting in the Lord, and according to God’s Word,
We will understand it better by and by.

By and by, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home,
We’ll tell the story how we’ve overcome,
For we’ll understand it better by and by.

—Charles A. Tindley, 1905

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S MIRACLES

Chronological Reading: Ruth 3-4 + Luke 6:1-25
Friday, April 3, 2009

Luke 6:10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Lord and Master:
I cannot explain it, but I know you often ask me to stretch first, and then give me the strength afterwards. Break my hard heart today so I can lay hold of your word in this way. Dissolve this stubborn steel and help me trust you and obey, because you always give the power to do what you command to be done.
If I am called to believe, and I have to stand with tears in my eyes and say, “I cannot understand, and cannot believe,” still you are able to help thou mine unbelief (Mark 9:24). Speak through your servants who preach to me. Speak through your word as I read. Speak directly by your Spirit to my conscience. You are the Son of God, and I desire opportunities to say to you, “Give me, Lord, the faith that you ask of me. Give me, dear Lord, the trust that you demand.”
What a way you have of doing your work—first to give the command, then to help the heart turn the command into a prayer, and then to answer that prayer by a promise. You say,
Ezek. 18:31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
That is clearly a command, but who can do it? So David prays:
Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Then later in Ezekiel you give the promise:
Ezekiel 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you:
First you command, then you set me to praying for the blessing, and then you answer by a promise. Help me learn this holy protocol of “command-prayer-and promise claimed” much better, for I know you desire to give more. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: 1Samuel 1-3 + Luke 6:26-49
Saturday, April 4, 2009

Psalm 7:17  I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.

O LORD, High and Mighty:
Brush off the filth from my garments! You have planted the tree, now don’t let the winds destroy it. I thank you that my accusers cannot sit on your throne, nor blot out my name. I praise you for my job, I praise you for my ministry for you, and I praise you for the present pleasures you allow me to have.
Psalm 8:1  O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
No heart can measure, nor tongue describe, a fragment of your greatness. You work always and everywhere in my life; today I acknowledge you in that.
Psalm 8:9  O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
Every creature is sustained by your provision. The fabric of the universe leans on your arm. Every place and in every situation, you are working your plan. Make me thrilled with what I see, and able to give glory to you.
O LORD our Lord, what a sweetness in this little word, our. How much is your glory made precious to me when I consider that you, Jehovah are my Lord, Adonai. Even the heavens cannot contain your glory: it is set ABOVE the heavens. It is too great to be expressed. Surely my life can do little enough to add to it, but Lord let it be! Make me a fit vessel, a vessel of honor unto you.
1 Corinthians 9:27  But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
Let me not be rejected, but approved, because this is the only way I can add to your glory. Be with me this day and this weekend. Help all I do and all I say to be pleasing to you for Lord, I need your grace. In Jesus’ name I ask it. Amen.

The Week of March 23, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: Joshua 19-21 + Luke 1:21-40
Monday, March 23, 2009
† Ephesians 3:20  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
Generous God, Creator and Maker:
Sometimes I get tempted to feel like I have asked for such large things—the soul of a friend or loved one, the health of someone sick, the reversal of a grave injustice or misfortune. Yet my asking has been too short a stick to reach the bottom of your ability. Your mercy is deeper yet. Make it so for __________.
At boldest and at best my prayers have many boundaries. I am often limited by my own sense of need. I barely know what I want. I have to be taught what to ask for or else I never ask correctly. My soul’s hunger is not keen enough yet to see your face in all its beauty. Sin blunts the edge of my spiritual appetite; therefore I cramp my own prayers. Thank you Lord, that you are not limited by my limited sense of need. I ask for bread and water, but behold you fix a feast!
Is there a single promise of God that any child of God perfectly understands? I don’t think so, because there is meaning—a breadth and length and height and depth—I have not recognized yet. You condescend to use human language, and while to me the words mean silver, to you the sense is gold. You never mean less than you say, but you always mean more than I think. For this let me magnify your name! Your power to bless is not bounded by my power to understand the blessing. Yes!
My mountainous needs heap-up, end over end, to build a staircase like Jacob’s ladder. It is no tower of Babel—no matter how great my needs are, they will never top heaven. Your ability to bless is higher still. Lord, do exceedingly abundantly above for me today. Give me faith to grip, and then to glorify you. Do this because Jesus is worthy of the honor that comes from your answers. Amen.

TUESDAY—40 DAYS OF PRAYER FOR THE KURDS

Chronological Reading: Joshua 22-24 + Luke 1:41-60
Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Revelation 5:8  And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
Holy God Our Creator:
The prayers you accept are not the chanting of monks, the litanies of priests, or the devout lighting of candles—they have to be the petitions of living saints. The sweetness of the incense is found in our lives fulfilling your mission. The acceptance does not come unless it is our own hearts praying. Make this moment so, Lord. Strike the spark to the incense now!
We are your saints. You have given us a status, set apart by the power of your Spirit. You purified our nature with divine life. We have been washed in the precious blood of Jesus, and by it sanctified unto you. When you filled us with your Spirit you set us apart to worship. We love you. We praise you. We bow down before you with solemn awe, lifting our souls in communion with you.
Help us reach the least-reached Kurds, the Behdini speakers. Our thoughts, desires, longings, confessions, pleadings, and praises are sweetness to your nostrils. Make theirs so, for it is perfume to your heart, delight to your mind, and music to your ears. In no other way can a spiritual God be worshiped (John 4:24).
In our prayers, that which is sweet to you is not the words we use, but it is the secret qualities comparable to the essence and aroma of sweet spices in the Old Testament (vials of odours). The burning of the coals draws-out the spiritual essence, and latent sweetness then wafts itself around until everyone confesses its power. Give us that spiritual force in our praying. You perceive the faith or absence of it as we pray. May our prayers be pleasing to you all this day, for we ask it in our heavenly mediator Jesus’ name. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: Judges 1-3 + Luke 1:61-80
Wednesday, March 25, 2009
Ephesians 5:13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Sovereign Master:
Bring your light, not just to save me but to silence me and to show me. Give me grace to stand up and plead your cause to others, because then an invisible Advocate also appears, the Holy Spirit, whose pleadings make it hard for men and women to resist the truth.
John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Here is the map of the Holy Spirit’s ways on a heart for revival. Convince me and convict me of my sin.
Isaiah 40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it:
So blow on me, Holy Spirit of God! There is a “withering word” by your Spirit that I have to experience before I will know your restoring and reviving power. The withering is necessary for our church, so I insist on it. There are too many today who are puffed up that have never been pulled down; so many filled who were never once empty; so many exalted who were never yet humbled.
I do not even understand the sinfulness of my own sin until the x-ray of the Holy Spirit falls on my dark, malignant mass. So convince me of my need for righteousness. I cannot create that righteousness from myself; I have to receive it from above. Cover my sin by Christ’s blood and make me acceptable to you.
I am a sinner. The next step should be judgment, but instead it is not. It is a hitherto unknown intervening work of your Spirit to show me my need for your righteousness. Give it to me by revival, I pray in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: Judges 4-6 + Luke 2:1-26
Thursday, March 26, 2009
1 Samuel 30:19 There was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
BLESSÈD assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long;
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior, all the day long.

—Fanny J. Crosby, 1873

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S MIRACLES

Chronological Reading: Judges 7-9 + Luke 2:27-52
Friday, March 27, 2009
John 9:25 One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
Miraculous Master:
I will never move the world if I let the world keep moving me. My influence on others will be greatly increased if I make my witness for Christ a personal one. What grace has done for me can be used to establish the faith of somebody else. I need to say, One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
Then, even those who hate the changes in me won’t be able to help noticing them. They know I was blind, but now I see. They know I was not moral, but now I am virtuous. They know I mocked God, but now I fear him. That is the best answer to all the skeptics.
“We should be doing much better if, instead of writing books of argument, and entering into debates, we each keep on, in our sphere, endeavoring to convert souls, imploring the Spirit of God to come down upon us, and make us spiritual fathers and mothers in Israel.” —C.H. Spurgeon
Oh, that others could see Jesus like I do since you gave me sight. Make me see a new beauty in Christ. Make me see a new loveliness in the gospel. Make me see an excellence in God my Father. If I have new eyes, do not let me use them to find a place to hide! I want to come out as boldly before others as this man did. If you have given me grace in my heart, give me the courage to confess it.
Praise the Lord; I can see clearly now. Sin that was once my joy is now my shame. I come to church in a different spirit. My attitude toward trials has changed. My language is not what it was. I have watched my temper to curb my temper. My nature is different. You have re-engineered my personality according to the input of information from your Word! You have transformed my attitude, conforming me to Christ’s image. Now make me into a stronger witness. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: Judges 10-12 + Luke 3:1-19
Saturday, March 28, 2009
Psalm 142:1  Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave. I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.
Heavenly Lord and Holy Father:
I have to pray when I am in the cave. If David had prayed half as much in the palace as he did in the cave, he would not have fallen to temptation. If he had been looking up to heaven instead of staring down at Bathsheba, if his heart had been in communion with you (as I need mine to be this whole day), then he would not have stained his character, shamed your name, and made his family suffer. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil (Matt 6:13).
You are not the God of my mountaintops only, but also of my valleys. You heard Jonah when he was in the belly of despair. Wherever I work I can pray. Whatever my circumstances I can pray. There is no place I can be banished where you will not hear, and where you are not as near as my supplications. There is no time when your throne is not accessible, because I am your child.
My caves should hear my best prayers. Lord, make me shine brightest in the dark! I pray well when I am driven by desperate dependence to pray.
David was anointed to be king, but the way to the throne was through affliction and the cave of Adullam. If thrown down this week, let me see it as a platform to a higher spiritual life. You make me hungry before you feed me; I am hungry for you now. I am also, so much the schemer like Jacob. Touch my hollow, natural strength, to make me a prince with you! Put me out of joint so I’ll be in place for your mercies. Then I will not regret going by the way of the cave, because here is where you teach me to pray.
Whether in a cave or on a throne, make me bless you by glorifying you with my life. Do it for Jesus’ sake and merit. Amen.

The Week of March 15, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: Joshua 1-3 + Mark 14:25-58
Monday, March 16, 2009

Job 42:10  And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Lord God and Father:
What a promise to prayer! Truly my ladder is taller than my pit. My longest sorrows have an eventual end, and there is a bottom to the deepest ditch of misery. Rains cannot frown forever; sunny skies will smile. The hurricane season does not last always. Lord, let the floods retrace their paths backward. The night cannot not hang darkness over my soul forever. Arise, O Son, with healing in your wings. You turned the captivity of Job; turn-around mine like streams in the desert. Make my life blossom and my passion return again.
Intercession was the sign of Job’s return to greatness. It was the rainbow in his cloud. Expand my soul like Job’s. Enlarge my life-coast in loving prayer for erring brethren, and show your heart to me by returning revival.
Intercessory prayer is the sweetest incense you receive. What wonders it can produce! In the Bible it stopped plagues, removed darkness that rested over Egypt, drove away frogs that hopped-up on land, scattered lice and locusts, removed thunder and lightning, and stopped your avenging hand on Pharaoh and his people. It healed diseases in the early church. When Moses’ sister Miriam was smitten with leprosy for her rebellion, Moses prayed and it was removed. Intercessory prayer even raised the dead when Elijah stretched himself on the child seven times. And so I pray for __________ and __________ to be saved.
For how many souls has intercessory prayer been a tool of salvation? Eternity will reveal it. In one sense there is nothing intercessory prayer has not done, and therefore cannot do. I have a mighty weapon in my hand. Lord, help me use it rightly, constantly, and with faith in Christ Jesus. Amen.

TUESDAY—CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: Joshua 4-6 + Mark 14:59-72
Tuesday, March 17, 2009

1 Kings 9:2-3  That the LORD appeared to Solomon the second time, as he had appeared unto him at Gibeon. And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

Dear Lord and Heavenly Father:
No matter what level of spiritual maturity we are at, we still need renewed appearances, fresh manifestations, and new visitations from you. We need to walk with you, but we also need your walk with us as we live your great commission. And while we thank you for the past, and look back with joy to your presence in previous days, Lord we seek a special visitation of your Spirit right now.
Daily we desire to walk in the light of your countenance, but even though the ocean has high tides twice a day, it also has spring tides. So though we seek to walk with you constantly, give us revival and bring us a special season where you open your very heart to us. Manifest yourself beyond what you do to the world, and even beyond what you do at all times to believers.
Not every day are we in the temple. Not every day is a banqueting day and high feast. But give us special days ahead, glorious and clear, where you unveil your glory in our midst. Come to us again in the fullness of your favor.
We seek your second appearances, Lord. We cry to you most fervently to speak a second time. We do not need to get saved again, but we need to have the windows of heaven opened anew over our heads. We need the Holy Spirit in special anointing and power.
What you spoke to Solomon concerned his prayer, and as you answered his prayer in a second appearance, so also appear to us now! Renew our strength in service to you. We ask it for Jesus’ sake and on his merit. Amen.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: Joshua 7-9 + Mark 15:1-23
Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Romans 15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

Lord of Glory, Lord of Grace:
It is when I have to deal with others that I see more clearly my own need of the Spirit of God. So many times in counseling, other people’s blind eyes overcome my clear presentations. Their stone-cold hearts defeat me. Sometimes they do catch MY idea, but I cannot get into their mind the mind of the Spirit, and the real soul of the gospel, or the secret of Christian growth. That remains (like creation itself) a work of revival that only you can do!
Psalm 36:9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.
Lord I pray for power! Lord give me your Spirit, the Illuminator! Come, Light of God, and make the darkness back up out of here! “Jesus walks,” but he does so much more. You alone can break my personal darkness with revival, and only after you have revived me can I enlighten others in your light.
Sometimes the spirit of a slave slips over me, and I get discontent when I do not receive immediate wages and visible success. Give me back the spirit of adoption as a child. Let me work without any hope of reward, just for the joy of serving you and making you happy. Make me satisfied with the sweet fact of doing your will in spite of (and even because of) all opposition.
Give me your Spirit, for your Spirit gives peace, rest, and tranquility in storms. He gives joy, boldness, and fellowship in trials. If I am not presently experiencing that, then I simply need more of Him in revival. Help me accept the delay of apparent failure as part of the trial I am made to bear, and then provoke me to keep on going. I can never fail as long as I go forward with you. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: Joshua 10-12 + Mark 15:24-47
Thursday, March 19, 2009

Psalm 142:1 Maschil of David; A Prayer when he was in the cave. I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.

I MUST tell Jesus all of my trials; I cannot bear these burdens alone;
In my distress He kindly will help me; He ever loves and cares for His own.
I must tell Jesus all of my troubles; He is a kind, compassionate friend;
If I but ask Him, He will deliver, make of my troubles quickly an end.

Tempted and tried, I need a great Savior; One Who can help my burdens to bear;
I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus; He all my cares and sorrows will share.
O how the world to evil allures me! O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me over the world the victory to win.

I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus! Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S MIRACLES

Chronological Reading: Joshua 13-15 + Mark 16
Friday, March 20, 2009

John 9:6 When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

Oh Merciful Lord:
They had just tried to kill you (John 8:59)! They picked up stones to cast at you for claiming to be God. But as soon as you saw the blind man you stopped, as if no bloodthirsty foes were following you. Your disciples also stopped—but only to ask legalistic questions! How like me, and how unlike my Master! You were always ready to act. The disciples wanted to know why the man was born blind, but you wanted to heal him from his blindness.
Lord, why do I stop to question and argue over somebody’s sin, instead of just pointing him or her to the Savior? All the time, I want to speculate about certain strange providences in my life. But you are always seeking-out the cure, not the cause. Anoint my eyes, because if I would only get your remedy, then I would see the world like I have never seen it before.
Man is born blind. My friends, relatives and acquaintances were born blind. Father Adam put our eyes out. In our natural state we cannot see spiritual things. Our spiritual optic nerve is dead. But you have sent your Son into the world. His gospel is despicable to men—almost like spittle. The thought of it disgusts many hardened agnostics. But Lord, we can put the gospel on the blind eye! Like clay, it seems like it would make us more blind than before, but
1 Corinthians 1:21 …after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
The Holy Spirit is so like Siloam’s pool. When we come to you by him, the conviction of sin is washed away. The blind eyes that once saw no beauty in divine things begin to see in a heavenly light. Thank you King Jesus! Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: Joshua 16-18 + Luke 1:1-20
Saturday, March 21, 2009

Psalm 71:15 My mouth shall show forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

Gracious God:
My righteousness is not worth mentioning. Filthy rags are best hidden from view! But your righteousness in Jesus Christ is able to fill my soul full.
Philippians 3:8-9 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
Forever dedicated to you, I am. My glory is to glorify you alone. I am your disciple.
Psalm 71:18 Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.
When my physical infirmities multiply, give me greater privileges in the world of grace to make up for the decline of blessing in the world of nature. Nothing can make you forsake me if I have not forsaken you. Your promise has kissed my fear into silence.
Psalm 71:21 Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
Let my life be a record of trust that others can read, for your power is so worthy of praise! The purpose of life for every believer is to work zealously for the accomplishment of your praise.
Psalm 71:24 My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.
You are mighty to save. It is safest to lean on you. Amen.

The Week of March 8, 2009

MONDAY—EVANGELISTIC PRAYER

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 16-18 + Mark 10:27-52
Monday, March 9, 2009

2 Samuel 5:23 And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

Captain of the Host:
David fought the Philistines and got a great victory. They came with their hosts from Philistia; David had his help from God. But when they came back again for round two, David did not go out without going to prayer.
How can I witness without prayer? How can I lead others to Christ today unless I start out where Christ is at? Sometimes I am successful with my testimony, but I still need to tarry a minute, inquire of the Lord, and ask you to bless my witness to __________ and to __________.
Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Direct me to someone who is seeking you today. Do it Lord, because I cannot go to battle except it be by your strength. It is a spiritual war I am in, so it requires spiritual weapons. I need the assistance of your fellowship to be
2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Help me, like David, to wait to move until your sign is given, and learn to take no step without walking in the Spirit. Sometimes I may need to take them by a circuitous route to the cross. Guide me; I give you the rudder of my life. I want your will to be my choice always, because whenever I try to carve my own path, I always cut my fingers. If I do not watch for your providence to lead me, I mar many relationships. If you are waiting, let me patiently tarry with you. And if you are moving, let me not be afraid to boldly go forth. Instruct me and teach me in the way to reach others, for Jesus’ sake and glory. Amen.

TUESDAY—CORPORATE PRAYER MINISTRY

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 19-21 + Mark 11
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Psalm 107:38  He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

Lord, we plead for your blessing!
David uses the phrase, He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and just so we beseech you for such a visitation of the Holy Spirit’s power that our church is increased on every side.
We confess Lord, we have been “minished and brought low” because we left our first love by losing our first works (Rev 2:4-5). Father, make us love your word. Make us love the gospel. Make us love this church. And replace all worldly affection with compassion for the lost, because without that we have a name to live, but do not.
Help us recognize that the conversion of souls is our personal affair. Let me feel lost unless lost souls are saved. Let me feel broken unless shattered lives are put back together. Give me heartbreak over sinners whose hearts are not broken! Give me painful anxiety for those who are not anxious. And then, in answer to my repentance, bring them to repent! In answer to my faith, bring them to believe. And in reply to my prayers, move them to call on you. You say you will do it; so we seek it as a personal blessing to our congregation.
We thank you for those who are healthy. Use those who are not, or those who nurse infants, to help us keep-up prayer through the night watches. And Lord, give us souls to fill the gaps in our class. Let those who do not have public ministry pray, and then make strong all those who go to the front—at church, at work, and in the home. Help us teach new believers to pray with power. And aid all of us, from our inmost soul, to continue to inquire of you…for souls, for blessing, for Holy Spirit power. We ask for the sake of Jesus and in his name.

WEDNESDAY—REVIVAL PRAYING

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 22-24 + Mark 12:1-22
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Romans 15:19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God;

Most Holy Lord:
There is no greater propensity to pride than living at a distance from you! It is good for me to be weak in myself, but better for me to be nothing. I rejoice in my absolute dependence on you as I pray for the work of the Holy Spirit necessary for revival.
1.    Quickening (making alive)
You need especially to be with us, to make alive those we are trying to reach for Jesus. I cry to you to quicken me in everything and in all that I do. Quicken the word as I drop it into the sinner’s ear.
2.    Enlightening
As inspired as your word is, it is never understood apart from the Author. I can read it all day and never get to the kernel truth and discover the inner and vital sense unless you lead my soul into it by your Spirit. Spirit of God, make the letter of truth alive to me. Transfer it to my heart! You be my “accountability”!
Error always emerges where truth is not known experientially. Do I know it by experience, or just in my head? Half the heresy in Christianity comes from not searching the scriptures with a teachable heart, and submitting to the light of the Holy Ghost. Even a lot of things I think I know become confused when times of trial put me to the test. Make me know what I know by having it burned into my soul by experiences that only the Spirit of God can give!
I cannot declare a message that I have never learned. Until I have tasted your truth, my lips cannot know power in telling it to others. Feed me the flavor of your fruit so I can labor in your vineyard (2 Tim 2:6). Make me know your grace, and love and truth in such a way I can teach it with power. Amen.

A DAILY PATTERN FOR PRAYER & BIBLE READING

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 25-27 + Mark 12:23-44
Thursday, March 12, 2009

Luke 17:21  Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

PREACHERS and teachers would make their appeal,
Fighting as soldiers on great battlefields;
When to their pleadings my poor heart did yield,
All I could say, there is something within.

Have you that something, that burning desire?
Have you that something, that never doth tire?
Oh, if you have it—that Heavenly Fire!
Then let the world know there is something within.

I met God one morn, my soul feeling bad,
Heart heavy-laden with a bowed down head.
He lifted my burden and made me so glad,
All that I know there is something within.

Something within me that holdeth the reins,
Something within me that banishes pain;
Something within me I cannot explain,
All that I know there is something within.

—Lucy E. Campbell, 1919 for the National Baptist Convention

FRIDAY—FOCUS ON CHRIST’S PRAYER LIFE

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 28-30 + Mark 13
Friday, March 13, 2009

Luke 6:12  And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

Lord Jesus My Savior:
What will come to pass in my days? Will I seek the closet of prayer and avoid a public display? I want to get the blessings of God; help me present my prayers unspoiled by a desire for human observation. I will get alone with you to move your arm. If I fast I will not appear to fast to men. If I plead personally with you I will tell no one about that. May it be a secret between you and my own soul, because then I can claim the reward openly. Do not let me become a Pharisee who sounds his trumpet in the streets.
Lord, you acted so as to prevent interruption of your prayer. You located yourself where you could pour out your whole soul, and so sought the mountain. Sometimes no walls can be suitable for my prayer. No room can house my intercessions. I have to walk with you while I pray, and pray to you while I walk. The natural becomes my temple when I am talking with you.
I don’t have giant hills and long shadows to be my companions, but I still have the sweet ministries and movements of your Spirit and your word. No pomp of human ceremony can equal that. Let the winds (or even the air vents) bear the burdens of my sighs and tears on their willing wings today.
Samson moved the giant pillars in the temple of the Philistine’s god. He was a dwarf compared to what I can be with you because of what Jesus is for me. Jesus is still on the mountain interceding as I pray. Let me bow my life to his will as I ask your blessing. I seek you in the private place of my soul so I can move your hand. Let me do it throughout the night of the church age as I wait for the dawn of my full redemption. Amen.

SATURDAY—IN THE PSALMS

Chronological Reading: Deuteronomy 31-34 + Mark 14:1-24
Saturday, March 14, 2009

Psalm 71:1 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.

O Gracious Lord:
You deserve my confidence, so I want you to have all of it. Every day, help me to guard against any distrust of you or any reliance on myself. Every hour I need to place my faith in your faithfulness.
Not only must I rest on you like a person that stands on a rock; I must trust in you like a person who hides in a cave. And my trust will be made more solid the more intimate I am with you.
I may be weak, but I am in a strong place. My security rests in the strength of the tower in which I hide, and not in any other man or woman. My weakness does not work against me as long as it makes me lean more fully on you. The drawbridge is up and the bars are in place, and there is a secret door by which I can enter into your throne as often as I want to, because I can always pray. You are as accessible as you are strong on my behalf!
Psalm 71:3 Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
Are you a strong refuge? You are MY strong refuge. You are MY rock, MY fortress, MY God (v 4), MY hope, MY trust (v 5), MY praise (v 6). If I am strong, it is in you. If I am safe, it is because you shelter me. If I am calm and at peace, it is because my soul has found its resting place of security in you.
Psalm 71:14 But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
When I cannot rejoice in what I have, I will look forward to what will be mine, and rejoice in the future blessing. Though Hell itself stands in my way,
Psalm 71:16 I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
